Green Diamond Cuts Jobs and Slows Logging

by EF!Humboldt ~ March 10th, 2009. Filed under: Tree-sits.

Green Diamond and their subsidiary, California Redwood Company, have announced they are eliminating 85 positions due to the continuing lack of demand for lumber. They also said that they are slowing their rate of logging. No exact numbers there.

The company could have begun logging in the McKay Tract on Feb 15th but has held off for some unstated reason. They have repeatedly sent sherriffs and workers into the area to scope out the situation with forest defenders occupying trees but so far they have not cut any trees down. Though they say they are slowing logging, logging could begin here any day. This is a particularly tempting grove for them because of the large amount of wood and the short from distance from the highway.
